Eyelid Surgery in Turkey

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes excess upper-lid skin and reshapes lower-lid fat bags, and these are two separate decisions. A heavy brow is a different question that the operation does not answer.

Eyelid surgery, known medically as blepharoplasty, is an operation that removes surplus skin from the upper lid and treats the fat bags of the lower lid. The two are separate decisions: an upper lid can be done alone, a lower lid can be done alone, and each has its own technique. The operation works on the lid itself. When the heaviness comes from a brow that has dropped onto the eye, lid surgery does not lift it, and that is judged first. People who come to Türkiye for this operation are examined with the brow held in its natural position, because that decides what the lid really needs.

What it addresses

On the upper lid, the surgeon marks an ellipse of skin within the natural crease and removes it, sometimes with a thin strip of muscle or a little fat. On the lower lid, the fat bag is either reduced or moved into the hollow beneath it, through a cut inside the lid or just below the lashes. The choice depends on skin quality and on how deep the hollow is. The operation shortens skin and reshapes fat; the shape of the eye, a low brow and dark skin tone lie outside what it changes and need other methods.

Who it is considered for

Eyelid surgery is considered for people whose upper lids carry a fold of skin that rests on the lashes or narrows the field of vision, and for people whose lower lids show soft bags, whether or not they feel tired. Some need only the upper lids, some only the lower, some both. Dry eyes, thyroid conditions, glasses or contact lens use and earlier eye surgery are discussed first, because they change how the lids heal. Fine wrinkles and dark circles are different findings, and the operation is not planned around them.

How the plan is made

Stitches in the upper lid are fine and are usually taken out within the first week, and a cut made inside the lower lid needs none on the skin. Cold compresses and lubricating drops are used in the first days, and the eyes feel tight, watery and sensitive to light. Bruising passes through colour changes over about two weeks, and reading, screens and make-up are reintroduced step by step. Sleeping with the head raised eases swelling. The scar lies in the crease and fades, though it remains a scar. This page is general information; your plan is settled after examination and a written quote.

What the written plan settles

At the examination the surgeon looks at the upper skin, the lower fat bags and the position of the brow, each in turn, and decides which of them the operation should address. Tear production and lid tone are checked as well. The planned stay in Istanbul is 5–7 days. Op. Dr. Ramazan Güler examines the eyes and stitches before you travel and clears the flight home when swelling and comfort allow it. The early bruising is not waited out in the city.

What Our Patients Say

Notes from patients who travelled for face and neck surgery. Results differ from person to person.

I was collected at the airport and taken straight to the hospital. Blood tests and the ECG were done before I met the surgeon. He was clear about what a deep plane facelift could and could not do.

My coordinator answered every question before I flew. The room was clean, and the nurses checked on me through the night after the neck lift. I flew home once the surgeon said I was ready.

I asked about eyelids as well as the facelift. They were only added after the surgeon reviewed my health and the operating time. I appreciated that it was not automatic.

The written quote listed surgery, anaesthesia, the hospital nights, transfers and follow-up. Nothing about the price changed after I arrived.

The surgeon told me to wait on a brow lift. I wanted everything at once, but the advice was honest. The face and neck result still looks like me, just less heavy.

Swelling in the first week was exactly what they described. The coordinator still replies now that I am home. Healing is slower than the photos online suggest, and they said that too.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

They can be, but they do not have to be. The upper lid is about surplus skin and the lower lid is about fat bags, so each is judged on its own. Some people need only one, and some need both in the same sitting. Doing both at once means a longer operation and swelling on all four lids, which is why the surgeon decides this at examination and writes each lid as a separate item.
Both approaches exist. A cut inside the lid, called transconjunctival, leaves no mark on the skin and suits fat bags where the skin is still firm. A cut just beneath the lashes is used when excess skin also needs trimming. The surgeon chooses according to what the lower lid actually contains, so the same approach is not applied to every patient.
No. A brow that has dropped pushes skin down over the upper lid, and removing lid skin cannot lift the brow. If lid surgery is done alone on a heavy brow, the heaviness can stay or the brow can even sit a little lower. For that reason the brow position is checked before the lid is planned, and a brow lift is discussed as a separate operation when it is needed.
It sits in the natural crease of the upper lid, so when the eye is open it is folded out of view. At first it is a thin pink line, and over months it pales and softens. When the eye is closed the line can be seen on close inspection. The surgeon marks the crease with you sitting up, before any anaesthetic, so that the line follows your own fold.
Swelling can make complete closure difficult for a few days, and dryness, watering and a gritty feeling are common early on. Lubricating drops or ointment protect the surface, and sleeping with the head raised eases the swelling. Closure normally returns as the lids settle. Persistent difficulty closing is reported to the surgeon at once, and a tear test before the operation helps judge the risk.
Contact lenses and eye make-up wait until the stitches are out and the lids have calmed, and the surgeon gives the day at a check. Glasses can be worn earlier, as long as they do not press on the incisions. Screens and reading are allowed in short periods from the first days. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are paused for longer, because they raise pressure in the face.
Excess skin is a fold of loose skin hanging over the lid margin. A drooping lid, called ptosis, means the muscle that raises the lid is weak, so the lid margin sits low over the pupil even without any skin fold. The two can look alike but are treated differently, and removing skin does not strengthen a weak muscle. Examination, including measurements of the lid, tells them apart.
