Fat transfer uses your own fat to restore volume to a face that has lost it, most often in the cheeks, temples and around the eyes. Part of the fat is absorbed in the weeks after, so the plan is built with that in mind.
Fat transfer is an operation in which fat is taken from one part of your body, purified and placed in small amounts into areas of the face that have lost volume. It is performed in Turkey for hollow temples, flat cheeks and tired-looking eyes, and it uses living tissue rather than a manufactured product. It is not a filler or a lip lift: it adds volume and shortens no distance in the face. Some of the fat is absorbed afterwards, so the surgeon places it in measured layers and explains that the final fullness settles over time. The first decision is whether your face has lost volume or something else.
The surgeon first marks the areas to be filled while you sit upright, then takes fat from a donor area such as the abdomen or thighs through very small incisions, using a thin cannula and gentle suction. The fat is washed and separated from fluid and damaged cells, and it is then placed in tiny threads at several depths through fine entry points, so that each small amount can find a blood supply. The surgeon builds the volume gradually and compares the two sides as the work goes on. Slight overcorrection is planned because some of the fat will not survive.
This is considered by adults whose face has become thinner with age, weight loss or illness, and who see hollowing in the temples, the cheeks or the under-eye area. It suits a person with enough fat elsewhere on the body to donate, and with a stable weight. It is not the right plan for someone with very little body fat, for a face that needs tightening rather than filling, or for a long gap between nose and upper lip, which is a different problem. Bring recent and older photographs, because the change over time shows where volume has gone.
Afterwards the face is swollen and may bruise, and the donor area is sore and bruised, as after a hard knock. A compression garment is worn over the donor area for the period advised. You sleep with the head raised, avoid pressing or massaging the treated areas, and keep away from heat and heavy exercise for the first weeks. The face may look fuller than intended while swollen, and the final fullness is judged after several weeks, when the swelling has gone and the amount of fat that stayed is visible. This page is general information; your plan is settled after examination and a written quote.
The stay in Istanbul is 5–7 days. The fat is taken and placed on the same day, and the following days cover the first look at the donor area and the face, a check that the swelling is falling evenly, and the removal of any stitches that do not dissolve. Op. Dr. Ramazan Güler examines both before you leave and is the surgeon who clears the flight. Written instructions explain how to care for the donor area, how to sleep and what to avoid pressing. Expect to look swollen on the journey home.
