Ear Surgery in Turkey

Ear surgery reshapes the cartilage and the fold of the ear so that it sits closer to the head and looks in proportion with the face. The scar is planned behind the ear, and the operation does not treat hearing loss.

Ear surgery, called otoplasty, is an operation that reshapes the cartilage and the fold of the ear so that an ear which stands out, or is folded or oversized, sits in a calmer relation to the head. In Turkey it is planned around the way the ear is built, because a prominent ear usually comes from a missing cartilage fold or a deep bowl, and each needs a different correction. The scar is placed in the groove behind the ear. The operation changes the shape of the ear, not its function, and it does not treat hearing loss, which belongs to ear, nose and throat medicine.

What it addresses

Most prominent ears lack a fold in the cartilage, called the antihelix, or have a deep cup that pushes the ear outward. The surgeon makes an incision in the groove behind the ear, exposes the cartilage and reshapes it with stitches or gentle scoring, so that the fold forms and the ear is brought closer to the head. Excess skin may be removed from behind the ear. Both ears are done in the same session and measured against each other as the work goes on. The aim is a natural fold that matches the other side, not an ear that looks pinned flat.

Who it is considered for

Adults consider ear surgery when they have long disliked how far one or both ears stand from the head, or the shape of the fold, and when they are tired of hiding the ears with hair or a cap. It suits someone with healthy skin behind the ear and no active ear infection. It is not appropriate for hearing problems, ringing or ear canal disease, nor for an asymmetry so slight that nobody else notices it. Come with your hair tied back, because the surgeon needs to see the ears as they naturally sit.

How the plan is made

You wake with a head bandage that protects the ears and holds their new position. It is changed in the first days, and afterwards a soft headband is worn at night for the period the surgeon advises. The ears are swollen, tender and sometimes bruised, and the skin can feel numb or tingle for a while as the nerves recover. You sleep on your back, avoid pulling on the ears and keep sports and tight hats away until you are told otherwise. The stitches are placed behind the ear, where they are hidden. This page is general information; your plan is settled after examination and a written quote.

What the written plan settles

The stay in Istanbul is 3–5 days. The operation is done early, and the head bandage is checked and changed within the first days, so that the incision behind each ear can be seen. Op. Dr. Ramazan Güler reviews both ears before you leave and is the surgeon who clears the flight. Written instructions cover the headband, sleeping position and hair washing, and you are told which sensations are expected and which should be reported. Plan a quiet stay; the journey home is easier if you avoid knocking the ears.

What Our Patients Say

Notes from patients who travelled for face and neck surgery. Results differ from person to person.

I was collected at the airport and taken straight to the hospital. Blood tests and the ECG were done before I met the surgeon. He was clear about what a deep plane facelift could and could not do.

My coordinator answered every question before I flew. The room was clean, and the nurses checked on me through the night after the neck lift. I flew home once the surgeon said I was ready.

I asked about eyelids as well as the facelift. They were only added after the surgeon reviewed my health and the operating time. I appreciated that it was not automatic.

The written quote listed surgery, anaesthesia, the hospital nights, transfers and follow-up. Nothing about the price changed after I arrived.

The surgeon told me to wait on a brow lift. I wanted everything at once, but the advice was honest. The face and neck result still looks like me, just less heavy.

Swelling in the first week was exactly what they described. The coordinator still replies now that I am home. Healing is slower than the photos online suggest, and they said that too.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The operation reshapes the cartilage of the outer ear and does not enter the ear canal, the eardrum or the structures inside. Hearing is carried by those inner parts, so a change in how the ear looks does not change how it hears. If you have hearing loss, ringing or ear canal problems, those need an ear, nose and throat assessment, and ear surgery will not treat them.
The incision is planned in the groove where the ear meets the head, so the scar lies in a natural crease that is hidden when you face forward. It can look pink and slightly raised for a time and softens as it matures. Hair and the angle of view hide it in most situations. The surgeon shows you the line on the ear at the examination and explains why it lies there.
Ears usually stand out because the fold in the cartilage, the antihelix, is missing or shallow, or because the hollow of the ear is deep. The surgeon reshapes the cartilage so that the fold forms and the ear sits closer to the head. Which cause is present decides which method is used, so the ear is examined in daylight from the front and from behind. Both causes can also exist in the same ear.
No face is exactly symmetrical, and ears are rarely a matched pair at the start. The surgeon measures the distance from the head at several points on each ear and aims to bring them to a similar position and shape. Small natural differences usually remain, and you are told in advance which differences are likely, so that the aim is a balanced pair and not identical ears.
A head bandage is worn at first and is removed or changed at the first review. After that a soft headband is worn, usually at night and during rest, for the time the surgeon sets. Its job is to stop the ears from being folded forward in sleep and to protect the new fold while it heals. It should be snug but not tight, and pain under it should be reported so the position can be adjusted.
In many adults it can, with numbing injections and light sedation if desired, and the choice is made with you at the examination. General anaesthetic is used when it is safer or more comfortable, or when other procedures are combined. With local anaesthetic you are awake but feel no pain, and you can go to your hotel the same day if the anaesthetist agrees.
Glasses are usually worn again once the early swelling allows, taking care that the arms do not press on the incision. Earphones that sit in or over the ear are avoided for the first weeks. Sleeping on your back is advised until the surgeon allows the side, because pressure can bend the new fold. Your written instructions give the usual timing, and the surgeon adjusts it at the review.
